I hope you all had a wonderful week. I hope you all enjoyed the first half of the book. This week we will be finishing the book. This week's post will be based on how you will or would use this book in your classroom ( like a lesson plan). Please post any resources you would use. Please make this post meaningful.

Assignment #3
Summer is rapidly going by. I really hope all of you are enjoying the summer and getting out. We begin book number two, Jim Thorpe. This book is written by a native author. I hope you all find this book informative and enjoyable. The focus of this book will be on how you as an educator could use this resource within your classroom. We will read Chapters 1-20 this week.
Your assignment will be to post your ah ha's for the first half of the book, think about the impact this man had on his tribe as well as other tribes. Questions to answers:
1. Do you believe it was easy to live within two cultures for Jim.
2. What do you think Jim's father meant by this quote: "Son you are an Indian. I want you to show other races what an Indian can do."

Assignment #2
Hello all,
Hope you all had a good first week. This book is a very difficult read in the fact that it has many red flag warnings concerning the way Native Americans are depicted. I choose this book as example of a book that could be used in classroom but would need a lot of background knowledge for students, one would need to talk about perspective and how it effects a person's writing and thoughts, one would need to talk about stereotyping, and much more. One can see that this book has many flaws.
Assignment two will be two weeks long (Posts due on July 25). You will finish the book, answer the questions listed below and comment on others posts. Please be thoughtful in your answers. Again thank you for your support of the summer book club. Have a great couple of weeks. We will begin Jim Thorpe on July 26th.
Questions:
1. Should a white male outsider write a book about teenage Crow girls?
2. Did the author's depiction of life in a small town in Montana seem true (use personal knowledge)? Did the author's depiction of life on the reservation seem true or did it follow the usual stereo-type (in what ways)?
3. If you were a teacher or principal at a school in Big Horn County, what steps would you take to unite the two cultures in your school?
4. The author concludes the story by saying that "out here on the Little Big Horn there is no surrender." What does he mean? Do you agree?
5. What forms of racism did you encounter in this book and in life living in Montana?
6. Many Crow are upset with this book. Why do feel they would be? Please use your background knowledge and the Essential understandings as evidence?
7. Did the author betray the trust given to him by the people (Crow and non-native) of Big Horn County?

Hope you are all enjoying your summer break! Summer is flying by. Please read April's post. This will give you a better understanding of what is expected from this summer book club. I really appreciate seeing you all take time from your summer to participate. Thank you so much.
This week's assignment will be to read Part One "Preseason". Please list ah ha's from this section of the book, what essential understanding does this section of the book cover, one to two questions you have or you can pose to the group relating to part 1 only.
Please post by Sunday the 11th. All posts will be due on a Sunday. This weeks is extended due to the holiday weekend. Thank you.

Summer IEFA Book Club
Welcome to Victor School's IEFA Book Club #3 for
the 2009-2010 School Year

This blog was designed to help build background knowledge, bring ideas together and to help bring IEFA alive for educators. Victor School is dedicated to bringing the truth to our students. Teachers who implememnt IEFA into the classroom, continue to build background knowledge, and who seek out connection with tribal people are so greatly appreciate at our school.
In this blog session educators will be reading three different books (Full Court Quest: The Girls from Fort Shaw Indian School Basketball, Jim Thorpe, Original All-American by Joseph Bruchac, and Counting Coup: A True Story of Basketball and Honor on the Little Big Horn by Larry Colton). Bloggers will look at perspectives presented in the books, accuracy of information presented, and how the books relate to the essential understandings of IEFA.
Educators will be asked to post over a two month period. Every week a new question or two will be presented. You will need to reponsed to each question and comment on others posts in order to recieve OPI credit (9 renewal credits) and your stipend. The book club will meet when school begins to have a full discussion and turn in books, packet, and one page reponse paper for each book.
Can't wait to see you on the blog trail and read your ideas, thoughts, and conversations!

4/16- Friday we will meet at Vicki's about 11:30 for potluck lunch and book club meeting. We will be there for about 2hours.
